A studio exploration for Simplehuman: a rectangular motion-sensor trash can with a hidden built-in vacuum and an identical half-cylinder broom — two cleaning tools collapsed into one quiet object, designed around the brand's principles of CLEAN, EFFORTLESS, and METICULOUS.

Simplehuman is a privately-owned designer and manufacturer of kitchen, bath, and beauty tools based in Torrance, California.
Their language sits on sensor technology, polished stainless steel, and an obsession with touch-free operation. Every product treats the home as a place where the best objects don't ask for attention — they earn it.

"The most difficult thing about cleaning is to clean the vacuum itself."
It's hard enough to get everything from the bin into the trash without touching the dirt, without inhaling the air engulfed by germs and dust particles. Cleaning ends up chaotic and messy — and that's the opposite of what Simplehuman stands for. The opportunity was to design a vacuum that doesn't add friction to the home, it removes it.

Three pillars hold up everything Simplehuman makes — and they became the brief for this project too.
CLEAN. An elegant, unobtrusive interface and hygienic surfaces that encourage germ control without ever shouting about it.
EFFORTLESS. Simple, common tasks should be frictionless and obvious — the product should be a pleasure to use and feel easy and clear, even the first time.
METICULOUS. Design that demonstrates respect for people's time and attention through thoughtful, elegant craftsmanship.

The Punctilious. Someone who pays close attention to detail, and finds happiness in small things being just right.
The Future Believer. A dreamer and perceiver of what could be, who always thinks outside the box.
The Germaphobe. Someone who would always keep their hands far from germs.

Technology that hasn't yet shown up on a vacuum, bringing an innovative element to a category that competes mostly on suction power.
A vacuum design that integrates into the Simplehuman product line's visual appearance — shape, material, color, language.
Premium vacuum brands like Dyson, but at a more accessible price point that fits how Simplehuman customers already buy.
"Effortless" user experience — design every interaction around the brand's core principle, not around technical specs.
Two tools, one object: Dust Collect and Dust Unload.
Sweeping and trashing are two halves of the same task, but they live in two separate objects. The concept collapses them — the trash can becomes the home of the broom, and the act of putting the broom back is what empties it. One gesture replaces the broom-pan-bin chain entirely.

A half-cylindrical broom that slots into the bin so cleanly the pair reads as one object. No protruding handle, no awkward dock.
A silent but powerful vacuum that activates the moment the broom is reattached, pulling every particle off the bristles into a sealed chamber.
High-performance motion sensing for true no-touch use — the lid opens before your hand reaches it.
Fingerprint-proof finish infused with nano-silver particles that prevent microbes from reproducing on the surface.
Internal damping designed to minimize vibration and noise — the vacuum should be felt as relief, not as interruption.
A flush charging port detail keeps the silhouette uninterrupted from any angle.
